Family therapy is a treatment modality that incorporates a systems perspective to treating the individual. A premise pf family therapy is that the family is a unique social system with its own structure and patterns of communication. These patterns influence, and are influenced by, the parents' beliefs and values, the personalities of all family members, and the influence of the extended family (grandparents, aunts, and uncles). Therefore, each family develops its own unique personality and is powerful influence on its members. Family therapy is based on the concepts that problems in one family member may be a symptom of a larger family problem and any change in a member affects each member individually and the family structure.
